Anna meets Ana

by Caroline Smailes on June 26, 2009

An obvious statement, but as writers we have to both create and name characters. I don’t know about you, but it takes me such a long time to find the perfect name that ‘fits’ with all the personality quirks that I want my character to have. I’ve been known to change names mid-novel, when the name just didn’t feel right.

But,if I flip this over and think about the reader. How would you feel if you were given a copy of a novel and the main (suicidal) character had the same name as you?

If you’ve 8 minutes to spare, take a look at this TWINterview of my publisher, Mr Scott Pack, being interviewed by two gorgeous girls. (Is it wrong that I am so amused that he looks a lot terrified?). Near the end, you’ll see Anna Lewis (spooky!) talking about Black Boxes (spooky!) and see how she reacts to having the same name as the main character in my novel.

Nah, not on your own.
I must say I took pleasure in watching the fear in his eyes too.

No it’s not wrong, it’s funny! Though he gets a bit more relaxed further into the proceedings.

But yes, interesting stuff about the names: not the same, but my own namesake had a very interesting name for his band which involved his/our name, and it was always weird and funny when I saw or heard it mentioned.

I think my options were to look terrified or like a complete letch.

I felt the former was the safe option.

But, despite how I appeared, it was a LOT of fun.

Bob – it’s all in the eyes, oh yes, oh yes… poor poor Scott having to be surrounded by two gorgeous girlies…

trousers – of course, you’re friends with another Trousers! And you have such an unusual name… that makes me smile!

Scott Pack – complete letch would have made me giggle too.

Oh boy! Gorgeous in stereo. LOL He does look a bit like he doesn’t know what to do with himself.

BTW, how do I get one of those clever black box widgets for my site?
