Nightjar Press

by Caroline Smailes on May 3, 2010

I’ve a lot of respect for Nicholas Royle, he’s a top class writer, he’s an amazing workshop leader (he helped/guided/encouraged me to shape In Search of Adam), he knows his short stories and now he’s Mr Publisher.

Nightjar Press is an exciting new independent publisher, currently specialising in single short story chapbooks by individual authors. There is so much that I love about these chapbooks, aside from the crafted content. Each is published in a limited edition, A5 size, 16pp, full-colour card cover, signed by the author, numbered and utterly affordable. They really are very beautiful things, they feel like a breath, like a pause that has been filled.

I have read ‘When the Door Closed, It Was Dark’ by Alison Moore (2oo copies exist) and ‘Black Country’ by Joel Lane (300 copies exist). Both are really very special.

‘When the Door Closed, It Was Dark’ by Alison Moore is sharp, darker than dark and utterly gripping. Her control of the language is absolutely outstanding. She is a wordsmith of the dark side.

‘Black Country’ by Joel Lane does not have a word out of place. The craft and control offer lesson in how short story should be created.

Each title costs a mere £3 + 30p postage for one chapbook or 50p postage for two bundled together. To order, readers should email (and say hello from me) Nicholas Royle on nicholasroyle@mac.com

I’ve been watching Nightjar from afar for a while now because I’ve heard so many good things about it (and Mr Royle) – think it’s about time I made a purchase!

Agree on all counts. Nick’s amazing and Alison Moore’s short story is still haunting me, deliciously unnerving. I’ve yet to investigate Black Country, but ‘The Safe Children’ by Tom Fletcher is another stunning Nightjar title. These chapbooks are wonderful – strange, beautiful, terrifying things
