The post where I’m left hoping Bernard Cribbins will adopt me

by Caroline Smailes on January 3, 2010

Oh but no, David Tennant is a dead tenth Doctor and Matt Smith is an alive eleventh. Littlest sobbed and said that she didn’t want a ‘Silly Billy’ new Doctor. I laughed, but secretly I wanted to sob and stamp my feet a little bit too.

First Paul O’Grady buggers off, then David Tennant, then James Corden… this is why really I should never ever, not ever, multiple-love celebrities. And now, a mere 3 days into this new year, and my only celebrity-love-hope for 2010 is that Bernard Cribbins will adopt me and let me call him ‘Papa’.

I think that Mr Cribbins is a shiny (and utterly perfect) star.

I have to say, Littlest makes a great point. I too, worried that we would have a Silly Billy as a new Doctor. David Tennant was perfect, and my heart certainly goes out to Littlest and all the other Tennant fans that will miss him dearly.

I missed some of the context in the finale, having not seen any more than the occasional episode in the last couple of years (and to think I was obsessed with Dr Who as a kid..). But Bernard Cribbins was responsible for the best of the emotional content and the poignancy in my opinion.

Still, my opinion is also that it would have worked better if it had been 15 minutes shorter, it diluted the impact for me. Now that I’m more iPlayer literate (?) I’ll have to see what the new chap is going to be like.

Haven’t seen Dr Who yet but hope to soon – so jealous here.

S. Cole – it’s the ‘change thing’. I think I was worried about DT at first… (wash my mouth out!)

trousers – you need to watch previous DWs. It is such good viewing. The ending does seem to have captured a bit of criticism, but I must admit that I was hoping Rose would make an appearance. We like her. It’s all a bit of fun and tongue-in-cheek and, well I love it very much and think that DT had a good final scene. Mr Cribbins made it for me. He’s around 80, I think, and utterly fabulous. I can’t believe that he hasn’t been honoured.

JJ Beattie – we can share him!

liz – you’ll love it!

I’m sad that DT is leaving his post as the doctor…we’re a few episodes behind as they take ages to reach the states. Shall have to wait, but for now, DT is still the doctor here! :)

I heart David Tennant. The script for the last one was absolutely spot on. Have high hopes now for Stephen Moffat (Blink) who’s taking over but will be a tough fight for the newbie doctor.
Should try and not add any spoliers for our international viewers who haven’t seen it yet!

Hi Caroline and a happy new year to you and yours. I too feel a little boo hoo at the loss of the good doctor. DT did feature a lot on the telly over xmas though!

Happy New Year and sympathies with all the recent tv losses. I had a lump in my throat watching Dr Who and only managed to retain any dignity at all because my youngest stepson was watching it with me. BC was wonderful to watch.

Angie – oooh, HE’S STILL THE DOCTOR! Should I move over to the States or is that possibly a little extreme?

emerging writer – “Should try and not add any spoliers for our international viewers who haven’t seen it yet!” I agree! I’ve tried very hard to be mysterious…

Fionnuala – he made Christmas a very pretty place to be :)

Debs carr – I accept your sympathies for all the recent tv losses and thank you for your support during this awful time…

We’d welcome you with open arms! :) We watched the final episode yesterday (not as far behind as I thought this time). Husband watched me closely for tears, so I braved it stoically. It was a good ending, and the intro to the new doctor was funny (‘not a girl am I?!’ ‘still not ginger!’), but we’ll just have to see how he does.
