In simple terms, ‘The Third Pig Detective Agency’ is very much my kind of book. It answers a question that has been bugging me for a number of years, “What happened to that little pig who built his house from bricks?”
Harry Pigg is that pig, the one who made his house from bricks. He is now a detective, famed for discovering the truth, that Hansel and Gretel were actually devious murderers! Apparently they had murdered that poor old woman and weren’t innocent little kiddies, not at all. But business is lousy, so money is tight and Harry Pigg’s debts are rising. Then in walks Mr Aladdin, the richest man in Grimm Town. He needs Harry’s detective skills to help locate his missing lamp. And so the story begins…
I guess ‘The Third Pig Detective Agency’ is YA fiction, but for me it captures so much of my youth that it made me smile and laugh out loud. I’d argue that this is book for adults, those like me who have a love of the traditional with a twist of the modern. There are references to films, to nursery rhymes, to fairytales and to a pop culture that is sure to spark a following from people who like a quirky, easy and well crafted read. It’s clever, everything links and crosses and characters that we all know from tales of old, well they jump out of the page and dance around.
Another adult, a lovely lady, who won a copy in my Black Boxes photo competition emailed,
Just to say my book arrived this week, my prize from the photograph competition, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Makes me chuckle out loud. So thank you for that.
So, see, it’s funny and clever!
‘The Third Pig Detective Agency’ is in the Adult Crime 3 for 2 at Waterstone’s and can be bought online. And Bob Burke blogs here (do go and say hello) and if you can help spread the word and ask your local bookshops if they have a copy, this will help to get a bit of buzz going. Writers and readers should stick together etc etc etc (but, mainly, just because it’s such an enjoyable read).
